Did you know… Ottawa Comiccon 2016 is coming in May … and so is Alan Tudyk … and more!!!

Nín hǎo everyone!  I can not believe how time has flow and we are already looking at Ottawa Comiccon 2016 approaching in just under 2 months … whoa!!!

This year’s line up for Ottawa Comiccon is firming up nicely and so far we have one of the Firefly cast coming to OCC 2016 that has not yet visited Ottawa … Alan Tudyk!  Shiny!!!

Alan Tudyk coming to Ottawa Comiccon 2016!

So not only is Alan … out beloved Wash … coming to Ottawa Comiccon this May but Firefly Cargo Bay is also returning!!!  Shiny Browncoat things to buy … oooooh!  If you will remember Firefly Cargo Bay was here for a visit at Pop Expo 2014.  Great to have them back again for Ottawa Comiccon this time.  If you have not had a chance to shop with FCC … this will be an awesome opportunity to pick up some shiny Browncoat items!

Also … yes, I did say also 😉 … Ottawa Browncoats will have an awesome booth at Ottawa Comiccon this year!  Woohoo!!!  So while you are geeking out at OCC make sure you swing by the Ottawa Browncoats booth, check it out, and hang with some fellow Browncoats!  I understand the Ottawa Browncoats administrators/organizers are working hard on plans for some fun at the booth as well as possibly a tease or two for a future charity fundraiser event.  Do not know the details myself (I am sure the administrators/organizers will let you know more as we get closer to OCC) and it will be fun to see what they come up with. 🙂

Well that is it for now.  Planning to be posting more on some fun Firefly/Serenity tidbits but wanted to get the word out now about Ottawa Comiccon and the awesome Browncoat things and people coming to it this year!

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… “Out of Gas” Firefly Tabletop Gaming Day

Nín hǎo everyone!  I know, it has been a while since I posted a “Did you know…” blog post but I have been keeping the airwaves open for the Ottawa Browncoats administrators and organizers so they could let you all know about any events that were coming down the line … and yesterday there was a very SHINY Ottawa Browncoat event!

Though life got in the way, as it does from time to time, for the Ottawa Browncoats admin/organizers putting on an Ottawa Serenity Charity Screening (OSCS) this year but the Verse gave them and us a smaller but very nice substitute … the “Out of Gas Gaming Day” at Patty Boland’s pub on Clarence Street.  If you got to attend the event yesterday (Sunday, November 29, 2015) … it was pretty darn shiny, wasn’t it?!

I had to leave a little early and missed the “Out of Gas” episode viewing at the end of the day, but I was able to be there for several hours of gaming … and there were SO, SO many shiny Firefly games.

Firefly tableto gamesImg_0047_95 percent in sizeIMG_0064IMG_0065And yes, that is during game play and the character card in front of me … “Zoe” 😉

IMG_0056There were yummy munchies courtesy of Gold Sponsor Darner Media, awesome silent auction items and door prizes all donated by several very kind donors, many Firefly games (and extension packs) brought by or on loan from local Ottawa Browncoats.  The staff at Patty Boland’s, as usual, were amazing.

Yummy munchies … thank you Darner Media!

Img_0046_croppedDoor prizes and silent auction items … sooooo many!

Img_0060IMG_0061IMG_0062The silent auction bidding was pretty active for all of the items!

IMG_0059The Ottawa Browncoats admin/organizers who always put in SO many hours of work and dedication to all Ottawa Browncoat events were there making sure everything ran smoothly as well as partaking in the fun as time permitted.

About 20 attendees (like me) got to come and sit down at several tables with an amazing variety of Firefly tabletop games available to play to our hearts content in a comfortable private room filled with fellow Browncoats.  How shiny is all of that!!!

Linda at the welcome table as you entered the room selling bickets, Ottawa Browncoats buttons … oh, and yes accompanied by a few friends …”Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!”

Img_0052Bickets (button tickets) were $15.00 each with all the proceeds from the bickets, button sales (yes, Ottawa Browncoats now have their very own buttons!) and the silent auction going to two awesome charities.  The final tally from yesterday’s event … drum roll please… from the Ottawa Browncoats Community “Out of Gas” event page on Facebook … “Total funds raised $730 !!!  Donations to our fave charities (iSisters and Equality Now) will be made this week!  Thanks to everyone who contributed and supported!”.

Woohoo Ottawa Browncoats!!!

Ottawa Browncoats very own shiny button!

Img_0097_croppedSo much fun and wonderful to see fellow Ottawa Browncoats that I had not seen since … wow, I guess it would have been Ottawa Comiccon in May earlier this year … far too long!  During the afternoon I learned how to play three (3) new tabletop games and several others were demo’ed so I know for the next Firefly tabletop gaming day what to look forward to!  And we laughed … we laughed, a lot!

Through the afternoon you constantly heard, not only from my gaming partners, but drifting over from other tables things like “Gorramit!”, “Shiny”, “Okay, now we are really going to misbehave!”, “Full burn!”, “Oh no!  Not the Alliance card!”…………….

IMG_0051Congratulations to everyone involved and I am looking forward to future Firefly gaming events!

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

A late message from the crew of OCSS

Yes folks, September is upon us and sadly due to numerous factors, the will not be a charity screening of Serenity this fall.

The volunteer crew hopes that you will all continue to donate to Equality Now and iSisters on your own, and welcome new volunteers to step up and contribute for future events.

We look forward to getting back on track for 2016, and see you all soon. Keep flying!

Did you know… is Celebrating a 2nd Anniversary

Two years ago I was invited to be on the Ottawa Browncoats panel at the 2013 Ottawa Comiccon.   It was an amazing experience.  The panel welcomed an overflowing room of fellow Browncoats (a lot of faces focused on the podium panel table!) and the 45 minutes we were allotted just flew by.

Firefly Panel_Ottawa Comiccon 2013_some of the crowd_photo by Tom Leroux_15 percent originalAs the panel room emptied and we headed back on to the convention vendor hall floor I was asked by the Ottawa Browncoats administrators if I would consider blogging on the Ottawa Browncoats web site.  Wow (understatement) what an honour!

Time sitting on the Firefly 2013 and 2014 panels at Ottawa Comiccon flew by, and so have these past 2 years blogging here on the Ottawa Browncoats web site.  To me, that shows I have been having a great time and hopefully you all have enjoyed it as well.

On May 24, 2013 when the Ottawa Browncoats posted their welcome to me here on the Ottawa Browncoats web site my hope was that perhaps a few people might like what I wrote.  I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined or known that I would actually catch the attention of people like Shawna Trpcic or Alan Tudyk’s Con Man team … which I will admit did prompt a few happy dances … but absolutely my biggest joy has come from sharing all things Firefly and Serenity with you, my fellow Browncoats.

My sincerest thanks to the Ottawa Browncoats for inviting me, not only on the two panels that Ottawa Browncoats have had at Ottawa Comiccon to date, but also for giving me the opportunity to blog about a subject I am somewhat (cough) passionate about.

Finally, my thanks to you the readers.  I hope you have enjoyed past posts and hopefully will continue to follow along for future adventures with “Did you know…“.

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… a 10th birthday party … but this one is not for Serenity

I WANT this kind of birthday party … what Browncoat would not?!!

Ainsley’s mom Nikki says at one point…

“Is there anything better in this world than watching a bunch of kids wearing Jayne hats and trying to eat Ice Planets?

I think not.  It was epic, and the memory will forever make me feel warm and fuzzy.”

The next generation of Browncoats … shiny!

I need not say more.  Nikki has given us a full account of her daughter’s 10th birthday party in her Tikkido blog post, so sit back and enjoy…

Did you know… Adventures of a Browncoat @ Ottawa Geek Market

So I was walking around the 2015 Spring Ottawa Geek Market (OGM) a couple weekends ago and, as we do at these types of events, I was standing in line a few times.  You meet some of the most interesting people in lines and you never know what will happen. First though let’s back track and give you the lay of the land so to speak.
.
I had gone to the OGM on the first day (Friday) and had a great time.  However, one thing I forgot to do was to bring my Rich Lauzon (aka Richtoon’s) Firefly crew poster to have Rich sign it.  Stupid me, bringing it was one of the things on my list to do at OGM.
Firefly crew by Rich Lauzon
I knew Rich was going to be there at OGM, and he knew I was coming as we had talked about it at C.O.N. – Creative Ottawa Nerds the weekend before so when he saw me the first thing Rich said was “Did you bring your Firefly poster?”.  Oh oh 🙁 … ah well, there is always Ottawa Comiccon in May to try again.  By the way, C.O.N. was awesome and it looks like the first one was such a success they will be back in the Fall of this year for another geek craft fair!
.
Whops, sorry, side tracked again 😉 … now back to OGM and forgetting my Firefly crew poster.  The following day it turned out I had more free time than I had anticipated and was able to get back to OCM (weekend pass) … this time WITH the Firefly crew poster … and, yes, I did get Rich to sign it.  Thank you Rich  😀
.
I had won that Rich Lauzon Firefly crew poster in an Ottawa Serenity Charity Screening (OSCS) silent auction last September (2014) along with another Firefly crew poster by Elle Babin-Sather (aka Elleisamonster).  Elle’s poster was already signed by her when I got it and I have since been in touch with her to thank her for that very shiny poster.  Thanks Elle  😀
Firefly crew by Elle Babin-Sather (aka Elleisamonster)
Now back to where this all started with me standing in line at OGM.  I got chatting with the gentleman behind me and saw that he had a merchandise bag.  As we all often do at these events I asked “So what goodies have you gotten so far?”.  He pulled out a cool t-shirt and then he asked me the same thing. I start to explain and show him my posters (I had both with me) when the gentleman said “Firefly!”.
.
Okay, obviously I am talking with a Browncoat for sure and we ended up talking for a little while about Firefly, the posters, the creators/artists of the posters, how I got them at last year’s OSCS, etc.  Next thing I know a friend of the gentleman came by and said ‘Oh wow, Firefly!  Awesome posters!’.  Before I knew it one of them pulled out their cell phone and they were looking up the Ottawa Browncoats Facebook page.  By how enthusiastic they were as we parted company, there will be at least 2 more Browncoats coming to the annual OSCS.  Shiny!
.
And yes that gentleman was correct, awesome posters they are indeed.  If you want to see what shiny Firefly and other fandom art Rich and Elle are creating and have for sale check them out through their links below.  You can also meet them both in person at upcoming conventions.  Rich will be at Ottawa Comiccon from May 8th – 10th and Elle will be in Toronto at Fan Expo Canada from September 3rd – 6th.
.
Rich Lauzon (Ottawa, Ontario)
.
Elle Babin-Sather (Wetaskiwin, Alberta)
.
So next time you are standing in line perhaps start up a conversation with the people around you.  You ever know who you will meet and where the conversation might go and what you might learn or be able to share.
.
Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… Con Man – A Crowdfunding Project from Alan Tudyk

UPDATE – March 16, 2015

How shiny is this … this blog post was picked up and shared on the Con Man’s Facebook page!!!

Con Man- Facebook - Did you know Blog PostNow on to see what caught their attention…

Con Man Banner

Many of you probably have seen postings and stories over the last few days about Alan Tudyk‘s crowdfunding project for Con Man.  For those who have not you may be saying ‘What … why is Alan making a series about con men?’  No, that is not what Con Man means … it means ‘Convention Man’.  I bet that got your attention didn’t it! 😉

Read what Alan says about Con Man…

“Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk-Me!) was a co-star on Spectrum, a sci-fi series which was canceled -Too Soon- yet became a cult classic. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major movie star. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events. The show will feature all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way to these events.”

Now hold on, some of that sort of sounds familiar.  Let me see, what could that be reminding me of?  😉

Whops, sorry to have interrupted your reading … please proceed … Alan goes on to say…

“The series is a light-hearted take on the personalities, luminaries, and characters in the scifi community we are privileged to call ourselves members. Con Man is a way to share some of the surreal occurrences we have had, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans.

I wanted to make a show that featured all of my favorite convention artists and friends together. Not only that, I wanted to celebrate the world where heroes, villains, zombie hunters, and space pirates all overlap. I especially wanted to work with my friend Nathan Fillion again.”

Teaser >>>  https://vimeo.com/122040375

In less than 24 hours the initial $425,000.00 (US) goal was reached and continued to grow well past that with little sign of slowing down.  The fundraiser continues to grow on its way to the $2,000,000.00 goal that will ensure the first season of the now funded (at $1,750,000.00) 12 ten minute web episodes going on DVD/Blu-ray.

To see some of the craziness that has been going on, this is what happened when Con Man reached the $1,750,000.00 goal >>> https://vimeo.com/122155599

It has been fascinating to watch the rapidly growing fan support, and I have not been surprised in the least.  After all these are members of our beloved Firefly crew who are involved in this project … Alan Tudyk (creator, director, writer, co-star), Nathan Fillion (producer, co-star) … plus a number of others from the alumni of Joss Whedon shows.  How can you go wrong with that combination!

Joss Whendon - Con Man TweetCan’t wait to see what happens especially the last 3 episodes of the first season when the show will be about Spectrum, the space show within the show, and I hear they will be on a space ship!

Spectrum cards - Con Man“Spectrum takes place in The Softwire series of science fiction novels written by PJ Haarsma, who is also a producer of Con Man.”  (Excerpt from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Con_Man_%28web_series%29)

The Con Man fundraiser project runs until April 10th and filming is expect to begin over the summer.  Once completed the web series will be streamed through Vimeo’s on demand service.  In the meantime, why not get on board and join in supporting a very fun project … and their perk levels are pretty shiny as well!

2015 Admin Crew!

Sunday, March 1st, we had a small crew come out and voice their commitment to helping continue having some serious fun with the Ottawa Browncoats Community in 2015.

New positions were filled, new ideas discussed and we will be able to provide more information as we get it organized in the next few weeks.

Not shown in photographic evidence are Gailene and me. Gailene has been helping for years as a general volunteer and will be doing so again, and you see enough of me as I’ve been MC-ing the event for the while and been the Chair in the past. I’ll likely MC again at this year’s event.

If you are interested in helping out at Ottawa Browncoats events, please sign up to our mailing list and we’ll keep you informed of opportunities. We have some new ideas brewing; as they are formulated, we’ll put out the call and welcome your help!!

So for now, please meet our 2015 Admin Crew:
