Did you know… Serenity 10th Anniversary

Xi-n Nián Kuài Lè!  Happy New Year!

Hope everyone has had a safe and happy holiday season.

We now have a few days of 2015 under our belts and looking forward to what shiny adventures this new year will bring our way,  one of which is the 10th anniversary of “Serenity”.  Wow, 10 years!!!

Might we see a “Serenity” 10 year anniversary reunion similar to the one for “Firefly” in 2012?!?  Now that would be awesome … and even better if we were lucky enough to have it happen right here at Ottawa Comiccon in May!  I know, I know … not likely … but you can not fault a Browncoat for dreaming 😉

So how will you celebrate the “Serenity” 10th anniversary?  By holding your own “Firefly” and “Serenity” marathon or perhaps attending a “Serenity” charity fundraiser event like the “Ottawa Serenity Charity Screening“?  Whatever your choice I know that each time you watch “Serenity” … and no matter how many times that may be … it is like watching it for the first time … you never loose the thrill.

Before closing off I want to leave you with this… of the many behind the scenes blooper/gag reels I think this is one of my favorites.  Hope you enjoy it 🙂

Did you know… Christmas Gift Suggestions #2

This is turning out to be a very shiny year for Browncoats Christmas shopping/wish lists not only from sources online but from local Ottawa stores 🙂

This time I was at The Comic Book Shoppe (Clyde location) to pick up my currently comic book subscription but also to check out their Black Friday sale that just started today.  The sale runs from today (Thursday, November 27th) through Sunday, November 30th at both the Clyde and Bank locations and the Anime Shop… and the saving are pretty awesome!

Now before I give you more details about the sale from CBS themselves … here are a few shiny Firefly/Serenity goodies I saw at the store earlier this afternoon, and yes … there are sales savings to be had on some of them as well!!!

Firefly Games and Captain Mal Doll Captain Mal Doll Firefly Games Firefly Figurines - Comic Book ShoppeOkay, now details about the sale from the CBS Facebook page yesterday (posted by Aaron Kurtzer)…

“You’ve all been very patient with me, and for that, I’d like to thank everybody who read my post about the Black Friday sale and didn’t strangle me! These sales are rolling in a day early, and staying two days late, so you’ve got a solid four days to take advantage of them!

— BLACK FRIDAY SALE: The details! —

Starting on Thursday, November 27th (tomorrow!) and running until Sunday, November 30th, we’re putting a good chunk of our stock on deep discount. Whether you’re shopping at The Comic Book Shoppe on Bank Street, or the one on Clyde Avenue, — or, yes, even The Anime Stop — here’s what you have to look forward to, starting bright and early tomorrow (Thursday) morning:

Action Figures: 10% OFF
Statues: 10% OFF
Art Books: 15% OFF
Gaming: 15% OFF
DVDs and Blu-Rays: 15% OFF
Clothing: 20% OFF
Glassware and Wallets: 20% OFF
Manga: 20% OFF
Graphic Novels: 25% OFF
ALL Back Issues, including DC New 52 and Marvel Now: 50% OFF!

The back issue sale also includes the Toonie bins at Clyde, so everything in them will be $1.00 each for the duration of the sale!

And, in case that wasn’t good enough, we’ve also made a handful of select items up to 75% OFF!

I can already hear people groaning with wallet-pain, but remember, generally speaking, everything during the sale is first-come, first-served, so I expect to see some hustle! Sadly, vintage comics don’t fall under the sale categories, so they shan’t be included.

Because the sales are so broad and sweeping, it’s fully possible that there’ll be confusion (“Does this fall under graphic novel or art book?”), so when in doubt: ASK US! Half the reason our staff exists is to help you out, so don’t be afraid to ask us questions, no matter how silly they may seem. “Do you have more in the back?” is a question that I want to hear at least FOUR TIMES by the end of the sale!

Thanks for trudging through my wall of text, guys, and remember that you can call, e-mail, tweet, comment here, or Facebook Message us if you have any questions or concerns. And just in case, I’ll re-upload my fancy little flyer. :-)”

So between what local stores that are now starting to carry Firefly/Serenity items and online shops, Browncoats are now starting to have many more options in their gift buying … no matter ‘who’ the gift is for 😉

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… Firefly Cargo Bay at Ottawa Pop Expo 2014

This past weekend Ottawa Pop Expo 2014 took place at the Ernst Young Center.  Though there were no Firefly guests or events/panels 🙁 we did get a real treat in having Firefly Cargo Bay attending as a vendor!  Shiny!!!

I was lucky to be able to attend Ottawa Pop Expo on Saturday and made a beeline directly over to Firefly Cargo Bay’s booth as soon as I entered the convention.  You could not miss seeing their booth at a distance … I mean how can a Browncoat not spot a “Kaylee-Esque Parasol”!?!

Karen and Mark already had a booth full of customers so I continued around to the Doctor Who Society of Canada and the Capital City Garrison areas to participate in their charity fund raisers and get some fun photos taken.  I would swing by Firefly Cargo Bay a little later and see if I could catch them during a lull to have a chat and take a photo or two.

I swung by several times … no lull, which is a very good thing for a vendor don’t get me wrong 😉  Finally I just dove in along with everyone else to browse, select, and make my way up to where Karen was standing.  I introduced myself to Karen … finally we meet face to face!  We chatted briefly and Karen then introduced me to her husband Mark.  This was Mark’s first time helping Karen at a convention.  Karen’s sister and/or adult nieces usually co-pilot the booth with Karen when Firefly Cargo Bay is attending shows in the US.  Recently Karen and Mark’s daughters have started helping do some co-piloting at Canadian shows with their mom, but this weekend at Ottawa Pop Expo 2014 it was Mark’s turn and he was doing a great job!

I picked up some new Firefly buttons, more for the collection 😉 , and snapped a photo of Karen and Mark.  Love Mark’s Wash inspired shirt!

Did you know… Christmas Gift Suggestions

I met a friend for lunch today at Bayshore Shopping Centre and, as I usually try to do, I was early … so, I wandered around a little until it was time to meet.  During my wandering I walked by Happy Daze on the 3rd floor level (right across from Starbucks) and came to a screeching halt when I spied a Browncoats zippered hoodie!  Whoa, this needs looking into 😉  It turns out I walked in to the store just as Adam, the owner and a Browncoat as it turns out, was starting to do a full Firefly/Browncoat display in the store’s window.  Shiny!!!

Here are some photos of the window display and some stock on shelves … and yes, those really are Firefly Christmas ball ornaments and they come in sets of 4!

Happy Daze_Firefly 3Along with the hoodie, Christmas ball ornaments, t-shirts and Jayne hats, they have Browncoat toques, socks, figurines (Mal, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee, Jayne), Serenity Christmas tree ornaments, Firefly Yahtzee and Firefly Clue.

Happy Daze_Firefly 4 Happy Daze_Firefly 2 Happy Daze_Firefly_1I had a good discussion about Firefly with Adam (that IS what happens when you get two Browncoats together after all) as we looked over all the shiny Firefly goodies they have in stock right now.  One thing Adam did say was that for most things, expect perhaps t-shirts, what they have in stock right now is all that they will be getting in before Christmas and even possibly only this one time.  See something you are interested in, I would suggest picking it up soon!

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… Firefly Fan Film “The Verse”

Over the years there have been many (and I do mean many) fan produced tributes to “Firefly” and “Serenity” … and more coming all the time.  Shiny!  Art, books, music, cosplay, scripts, stories, and video/film.  It is the last one that I am going to briefly talk about today … video/film … and one in particular.

Now being a Browncoat I am a tiny little bit protective of “Firefly” and “Serenity” … okay, very protective … so when someone says ‘fan film’ and ‘Firefly’ in the same sentence, I usually get a little nervous and skeptical.

We all love seeing those many wonderfully talent artists out there creating everything from ultra realistic art all the way through to cartoon caricatures.  But it is something very different to do a video/film as that begins to tread very close to home and starts to go head to head against something that we as Browncoats know pretty well and love … the actual on air/screen shown episodes of “Firefly”.

I have seen some fan video/film productions before and I give them all a huge thumbs up.  The passion and dedication that goes in to creating the end product is awesome and I say to those Brownocats, please keep it up and keep flying!  For me though, they were still not “Firefly”.

Fair comparison?  May be not.  It is tough not to compare though … and the bar is sort of set pretty high!  So I am not sure if it is now me over time seeing more and more fan produced “Firefly” and “Serenity” things and getting use to it … sort of easing those very strong boundaries a little … or just that this particular group hit the mark a lot closer than anyone else to date, but what I can say is that Loot Crate definitely got my attention with their fan film “The Verse“.

A little weak in some places, stronger in others, and in a few places … pretty gorram up the scale to that bar.  Good story, quite professional level acting, very good visual effects.  Overall I enjoyed the film and found myself actually checking to see if there was any mention of a next episode.  Interesting … was not expecting this 😉

The Verse” has a Firefly Online (FFO) connection which adds an even more interesting dimension … video/film and online gaming.  Hmm, remind you of something similar recently … “Defiance” perhaps as one example?!?

From FFO about Look Crate’s “The Verse“:

“In a sea of fan films, The Verse is nothing short of a standout. What makes this short tribute film produced by Loot Crate, purveyors of monthly geek subscriber boxes, so special are a good story, great visuals and professional acting. It also features Firefly Online goodies, including a brand new playable ship called the Overland that you can unlock in the game.

Based on the Pilgrim, the one-way transport seen in the Firefly episode “Bushwacked,” the Overland is a “pimped-out” version of that ship plan, modified for two-way transport duty. It’s a mid-bulk transport designed to have a funky, cobbled-together look – exactly what a fugitive captain’s boat should look like.

In addition to the Overland, an AFAS (Alliance Fast Attack Ship) makes an appearance, doing what Shinigami do best: terrorizing not-so-innocent traders trying to make their way in The Black. Other FFO Easter eggs abound, waiting to be discovered by you.

If the story of The Verse feels like it could be an FFO adventure — it will be. A future Loot Crate will include an FFO art card that has a unique unlock code on the back. Simply enter that code in The Cortex, our online community center for FFO players, and you’ll unlock a digital Loot Crate full of exclusive swag, including the Overland. The code will also unlock The Verse story as a playable job.

We will be announcing details on how to get this FFO exclusive soon”

So, now I leave it to you all.  Watch and judge for yourselves.

Personally I would like very much to see another episode (and possibly more) of what the Loot Crate crew have started with “The Verse“.  How about you all?

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

I know for a fact that the Geeky Godmother was VERY enthusiastic about this book when I was speaking with her earlier this week … so I had a little advanced knowledge 😉 … and I also know from another source that the chapter on Firefly has trivia and tidbits that Browncoats will love reading about … but no spoilers given away here!

Looks like this book will be another addition to my Christmas wish list … shiny 🙂

Thank you Geeky Godmother for giving us a glimpse in to this biography about an amazing gentleman’s life and work.  Joss is Boss … long may he reign!

Did you know… Geek Girls Ladies’ Night

Last evening I attended an all ladies geek evening that was held at the Comic Book Shoppe (CBS) on Bank Street in partnership with the Capital Geek Girls (CGG) …”The Comic Book Shoppe Presents: CGG’s LADIES’ NIGHT!“.

It was a fun gathering of about 150 ladies for several hours of shopping … everything was on sale for CBS’s “15 Anniversary Sale” plus some extra discounts just for us ;-).  Goodie loot bags for the first 50 ladies who made a purchase … that was just a ‘little’ popular.  Learned a new board game.  Met new ladies while standing in line or as I was exploring the store shelves for treasures.  There were yummy donuts to sample, cosplayers to chat with about their costumes, and much more!  And yes, there were some Browncoats there … shiny!

It was fun to see and hear ladies chatting about their various fandoms and interests.  I learned a few new things, shared some of my interests with others, and heard squeals of happiness when a long sought after or newly discovered treasure was discovered by someone next to you.  All round a fun evening.

Thank you Capital Geek Girls, Comic Book Shoppe, and everyone involved in organizing and running this event!

For more on last evening’s event check out the Geeky Godmother‘s blog post “Geek Girls Night Out“.

Did you know… ‘Who is the Better Outlaw Space Team … “Guardians of the Galaxy” or the crew of “Serenity” – an AMC Versus Panel’

I just finished watching the August 5th AMC Versus panel discussion and debate of “who the better outlaw space team is… GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY or the crew of SERENITY!”.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” – Marvel – IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2015381/?ref_=ttco_co_tt

Okay, I have not yet seen “Guardians of the Galaxy” … though I am planning to do so in the very near future … so I can not give a personal opinion on the entire movie its self yet, however from what I have already heard and seen about the movie so far and now the AMC Versus panel discussion I fully expect it to be a rollicking space adventure with lots of aliens and action.  Shiny!

What I can give is a personal opinion and knowledge on what I know about “Serenity”.  In a nutshell … “Serenity” was a movie made for the Firefly fans.  It is a super condensed Season 2 of Firefly and a wrap up of some of the story lines that were still outstanding from Season 1 with the aim of mostly ending the show and giving the fans some closure … for now that is 😉  “Serenity” came about largely because of the fans love and passion (as well as obsession as Joss says) which was then taken on to the big screen by more people who also love Firefly.

“After Universal acquired the film [“Serenity”] rights from Fox, Whedon began writing the screenplay. His task was to explain the premise of a television series that few had seen without boring new viewers or longtime fans.”¹.  ‘Based on original story ideas for Fireflys un-filmed second season’¹ the original script (190 pages) ‘attempted to address all major plot points introduced in the series’¹.  What we eventually get in the final theatrical release of “Serenity”, after Universal asked ‘to cut down the script to a size film-able under Joss’s budget constraints’¹, was not as much of a stand alone movie as Joss had wanted.  That is one of the main criticisms some of the AMC Versus panel has of “Serenity” … ‘that you need to watch the Firefly series before watching the movie Serenity to fully understand the background and relationships of the “Serenity” crew so therefore the movie is lacking.’
[¹Excerpts from Wikipedia – Serenity Collector’s Edition DVD cast commentary]

I had only seen a few episodes of Firefly before seeing “Serenity” at the “Ottawa Browncoats Serenity Charity Screening” a couple years ago.  Was I able to follow along through “Serenity” with only limited background knowledge, for the most part yes.  Did I enjoy “Serenity” … you gorram right I did … and then I went off over the next week to watch the entire series from the beginning, including those episodes I had already watched, and then “Serenity” again!!!

Just last month I had the opportunity to introduce a friend to Firefly and “Serenity” but what they did was watch “Serenity” first and then go back to watch Firefly … no, not what I had recommended how they do it but what are you going to do!  Anyway, what that did do though was give me first hand feedback on how they reacted to “Serenity” as a stand alone movie.  My friend’s comment about watching “Serenity” was ‘It was really good but I was a bit lost from time to time.  There was obviously background, stories, and some of the language and terminology that developed in the series but without having seen that as yet I did not have it to draw on … but once I watched a few of the series episodes it all started to come together for me.’

Want to see a bit more about the making of “Serenity” check these out:

So, in my opinion if you pit “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Serenity” against each other head on as stand alone entities it is like comparing apples and oranges … very shiny apples and oranges, but different fruit just the same.

Do I like apples, yes.  Do I like oranges, yes.  Do I consider them the same, no.  Will I pit “Guardians” against “Serenity”, no.  Will I/do I appreciate them for themselves as different entities … absolutely.

I have been looking forward to and am eager to see “Guardians of the Galaxy” … and I also fully expect that the DVD of “Guardians of the Galaxy” will be going on my Christmas wish list 😉

Now it is your turn.  I leave it to all you Browncoats out there to watch, listen, and ponder for yourselves.  Vote if you want or if you are of the opinion that this is really an apples and oranges comparison then perhaps let AMC Versus know that instead:

Oh, and just a heads up that if you have not as yet seen “Guardians of the Galaxy” there may be some SPOILERS that you might not want to hear about during the AMC Versus video, so fair warning!!!

On this installment of AMC Versus, the crew discusses and debates who the better outlaw space team is… GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY or the crew of SERENITY!” – August 5, 2014:

Did you know… Firefly Online

UPDATED – July 26, 2014*

Just a quick post…

Back in 2013 a new online game was announced … Firefly Online (FFO).  The venture has the teaming of QMXi, Spark Plug Games, and Fox Digital Entertainment.  Launch is supposed to be sometime in 2014.

Firefly Online

Yesterday i09 reported on Firefly Online announcing at the SDCC 2014 (San Diego Comic Con) that ‘all of the original Firefly stars will reprise their characters for the online game’.  Now that would be very shiny and we all wish FFO the the very best for a successful project launch of the product.

I am being a little skeptical/cautious with my enthusiasm over all of this … and we’ll see what happens.  Crossing my fingers that it will be very, very shiny.

Check out FFO and these other sites for more information:
