Did you know… Con Man – A Crowdfunding Project from Alan Tudyk

UPDATE – March 16, 2015

How shiny is this … this blog post was picked up and shared on the Con Man’s Facebook page!!!

Con Man- Facebook - Did you know Blog PostNow on to see what caught their attention…

Con Man Banner

Many of you probably have seen postings and stories over the last few days about Alan Tudyk‘s crowdfunding project for Con Man.  For those who have not you may be saying ‘What … why is Alan making a series about con men?’  No, that is not what Con Man means … it means ‘Convention Man’.  I bet that got your attention didn’t it! 😉

Read what Alan says about Con Man…

“Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk-Me!) was a co-star on Spectrum, a sci-fi series which was canceled -Too Soon- yet became a cult classic. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major movie star. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events. The show will feature all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way to these events.”

Now hold on, some of that sort of sounds familiar.  Let me see, what could that be reminding me of?  😉

Whops, sorry to have interrupted your reading … please proceed … Alan goes on to say…

“The series is a light-hearted take on the personalities, luminaries, and characters in the scifi community we are privileged to call ourselves members. Con Man is a way to share some of the surreal occurrences we have had, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans.

I wanted to make a show that featured all of my favorite convention artists and friends together. Not only that, I wanted to celebrate the world where heroes, villains, zombie hunters, and space pirates all overlap. I especially wanted to work with my friend Nathan Fillion again.”

Teaser >>>  https://vimeo.com/122040375

In less than 24 hours the initial $425,000.00 (US) goal was reached and continued to grow well past that with little sign of slowing down.  The fundraiser continues to grow on its way to the $2,000,000.00 goal that will ensure the first season of the now funded (at $1,750,000.00) 12 ten minute web episodes going on DVD/Blu-ray.

To see some of the craziness that has been going on, this is what happened when Con Man reached the $1,750,000.00 goal >>> https://vimeo.com/122155599

It has been fascinating to watch the rapidly growing fan support, and I have not been surprised in the least.  After all these are members of our beloved Firefly crew who are involved in this project … Alan Tudyk (creator, director, writer, co-star), Nathan Fillion (producer, co-star) … plus a number of others from the alumni of Joss Whedon shows.  How can you go wrong with that combination!

Joss Whendon - Con Man TweetCan’t wait to see what happens especially the last 3 episodes of the first season when the show will be about Spectrum, the space show within the show, and I hear they will be on a space ship!

Spectrum cards - Con Man“Spectrum takes place in The Softwire series of science fiction novels written by PJ Haarsma, who is also a producer of Con Man.”  (Excerpt from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Con_Man_%28web_series%29)

The Con Man fundraiser project runs until April 10th and filming is expect to begin over the summer.  Once completed the web series will be streamed through Vimeo’s on demand service.  In the meantime, why not get on board and join in supporting a very fun project … and their perk levels are pretty shiny as well!

2015 Admin Crew!

Sunday, March 1st, we had a small crew come out and voice their commitment to helping continue having some serious fun with the Ottawa Browncoats Community in 2015.

New positions were filled, new ideas discussed and we will be able to provide more information as we get it organized in the next few weeks.

Did you know… Ship of the Week

“This ship isn’t a tool, or a machine, or even a mode of transport – it’s a home.”

Those are the words that I first saw as I started to read World of Spacecrafts‘ post by Ian Dransfield on January 26, 2015 … “Ship of the Week: Serenity“.

There is only one spaceship that I know of that could fit that description … Serenity.

Serenity - Image Courtesy Firefly Wikia

I have been struggling from my first day as a Browncoat with how to describe to non-Browncoat friends in words how I feel about her, that wonderful ship, and Ian has pretty much summed it up in his post … it’s a home.

“it’s a spaceship full of tinned food and pull-out toilets; a workmanlike attempt at grace with all the subtlety of a brick through your window.  And it’s one of the most glorious boats we’ve ever had the good fortune to ride along with.”

Home … that is Serenity … family … that is Serenity’s crew.

“Try to watch those warmly-lit dinner table scenes and try – try your hardest – not to just want to be there, with them, shooting the space-shit.”

Why do we as Browncoats love, really love, Serenity?  Ian sums it up by saying…

“this ship isn’t a tool, or a machine, or even a mode of transport = it’s a home.  It’s peaceful.  It’s a place of – you guessed it – serenity.

That’s a huge part of the reason why, when you speak to any Firefly fans out there, they’ll always get dewy-eyed at the thought of Mal Reynolds and co. We weren’t just on space cowboy adventures with the crew – we were invited into their (space cowboy) house every episode.”

Home and family.  A group of people who for the most part in any other place or time likely would have little to do with each other … and here they are a family, closer than blood could ever bond them, on a ship that captures your heart in the first split second you see her.

How very fortunate we all are to have found Firefly and had that crew and ship become part of our lives.

Serenity … that says it all … sigh.

Okay, *sniff* … signing off now … I need to go find the Kleenex box…

Please read Ian’s full post at World of Spacecrafts.

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… Sean Maher Coming to Ottawa Comiccon 2015

Yes, you read the title of this blog post correctly … Sean Maher has just been announced as a guest coming to this May’s 2015 Ottawa Comiccon!  Shiny!!!

Sean Maher

(Image courtesy Ottawa Comiccon – Facebook)

Sean is scheduled to be with us all weekend long, May 8th to May 10th.

This is what Ottawa Comiccon says about Sean…

“Born in Pleasantville, New York, Maher trained at New York University, earning his drama degree in 1997.  His initial foray in television was starring as the title character on the short-lived TV series RyanCaulfield: Year One, opposite James Roday (Psych). In 2000, he was part of the main cast on the Fox series The $treet, which also starred Jennifer Connelly, Giancarlo Esposito and Tom Everett Scott. That same year he appeared on the last season of the hit series Party of Five, as Adam Matthews, love interest to Julia (Neve Campbell).

It was in 2002 that he was cast on the much-loved space-western series Firefly as Simon Tam, a top trauma surgeon, who gave up his career in order to rescue his little sister, River Tam (Summer Glau), becoming a wanted fugitive in the process. He reprised his role from Firefly in the film Serenity (2005).

After Firefly ended, he took on guest roles in several high profile series, including CSI: Miami, Ghost Whisperer, Drop Dead Diva, The Mentalist, Human Target, and Warehouse 13, as well as important roles on NBC’s The Playboy Club and ABC Family’s Make it or Break it. In 2012, Firefly creator Joss Whedon in his award winning film Much Ado About Nothing, a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The film also stars several alumni from Joss Whedon-helmed productions, including, Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Tom Lenk (Buffy/Angel), Fran Kranz, Reed Diamond (Dollhouse), and Clark Gregg (The Avengers).  April 2014 saw the release of the animated film Son of Batman, in which he voices DC Universe’s Dick Grayson (aka Nightwing), an adaptation of the Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert 2006 Batman and Son storyline.  Most recently, Arrow fans may recall his guest-starring villainous turn as Mark Scheffer (aka Shrapnel), a serial bomber from Starling City.”

Now, could we perhaps see more of the cast or production crew coming as well???

Crossing my fingers … there is still lots of time for many more announcements 😉

Did you know… Serenity 10th Anniversary

Xi-n Nián Kuài Lè!  Happy New Year!

Hope everyone has had a safe and happy holiday season.

We now have a few days of 2015 under our belts and looking forward to what shiny adventures this new year will bring our way,  one of which is the 10th anniversary of “Serenity”.  Wow, 10 years!!!

Might we see a “Serenity” 10 year anniversary reunion similar to the one for “Firefly” in 2012?!?  Now that would be awesome … and even better if we were lucky enough to have it happen right here at Ottawa Comiccon in May!  I know, I know … not likely … but you can not fault a Browncoat for dreaming 😉

So how will you celebrate the “Serenity” 10th anniversary?  By holding your own “Firefly” and “Serenity” marathon or perhaps attending a “Serenity” charity fundraiser event like the “Ottawa Serenity Charity Screening“?  Whatever your choice I know that each time you watch “Serenity” … and no matter how many times that may be … it is like watching it for the first time … you never loose the thrill.

Before closing off I want to leave you with this… of the many behind the scenes blooper/gag reels I think this is one of my favorites.  Hope you enjoy it 🙂

Did you know… Christmas Gift Suggestions #2

This is turning out to be a very shiny year for Browncoats Christmas shopping/wish lists not only from sources online but from local Ottawa stores 🙂

This time I was at The Comic Book Shoppe (Clyde location) to pick up my currently comic book subscription but also to check out their Black Friday sale that just started today.  The sale runs from today (Thursday, November 27th) through Sunday, November 30th at both the Clyde and Bank locations and the Anime Shop… and the saving are pretty awesome!

Now before I give you more details about the sale from CBS themselves … here are a few shiny Firefly/Serenity goodies I saw at the store earlier this afternoon, and yes … there are sales savings to be had on some of them as well!!!

Firefly Games and Captain Mal Doll Captain Mal Doll Firefly Games Firefly Figurines - Comic Book ShoppeOkay, now details about the sale from the CBS Facebook page yesterday (posted by Aaron Kurtzer)…

“You’ve all been very patient with me, and for that, I’d like to thank everybody who read my post about the Black Friday sale and didn’t strangle me! These sales are rolling in a day early, and staying two days late, so you’ve got a solid four days to take advantage of them!

— BLACK FRIDAY SALE: The details! —

Starting on Thursday, November 27th (tomorrow!) and running until Sunday, November 30th, we’re putting a good chunk of our stock on deep discount. Whether you’re shopping at The Comic Book Shoppe on Bank Street, or the one on Clyde Avenue, — or, yes, even The Anime Stop — here’s what you have to look forward to, starting bright and early tomorrow (Thursday) morning:

Action Figures: 10% OFF
Statues: 10% OFF
Art Books: 15% OFF
Gaming: 15% OFF
DVDs and Blu-Rays: 15% OFF
Clothing: 20% OFF
Glassware and Wallets: 20% OFF
Manga: 20% OFF
Graphic Novels: 25% OFF
ALL Back Issues, including DC New 52 and Marvel Now: 50% OFF!

The back issue sale also includes the Toonie bins at Clyde, so everything in them will be $1.00 each for the duration of the sale!

And, in case that wasn’t good enough, we’ve also made a handful of select items up to 75% OFF!

I can already hear people groaning with wallet-pain, but remember, generally speaking, everything during the sale is first-come, first-served, so I expect to see some hustle! Sadly, vintage comics don’t fall under the sale categories, so they shan’t be included.

Because the sales are so broad and sweeping, it’s fully possible that there’ll be confusion (“Does this fall under graphic novel or art book?”), so when in doubt: ASK US! Half the reason our staff exists is to help you out, so don’t be afraid to ask us questions, no matter how silly they may seem. “Do you have more in the back?” is a question that I want to hear at least FOUR TIMES by the end of the sale!

Thanks for trudging through my wall of text, guys, and remember that you can call, e-mail, tweet, comment here, or Facebook Message us if you have any questions or concerns. And just in case, I’ll re-upload my fancy little flyer. :-)”

So between what local stores that are now starting to carry Firefly/Serenity items and online shops, Browncoats are now starting to have many more options in their gift buying … no matter ‘who’ the gift is for 😉

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!

Did you know… Firefly Cargo Bay at Ottawa Pop Expo 2014

This past weekend Ottawa Pop Expo 2014 took place at the Ernst Young Center.  Though there were no Firefly guests or events/panels 🙁 we did get a real treat in having Firefly Cargo Bay attending as a vendor!  Shiny!!!

Pop Expo 2014 - Firefly Cargo Bay - Booth 933Image courtesy Firefly Cargo Bay

I was lucky to be able to attend Ottawa Pop Expo on Saturday and made a beeline directly over to Firefly Cargo Bay’s booth as soon as I entered the convention.  You could not miss seeing their booth at a distance … I mean how can a Browncoat not spot a “Kaylee-Esque Parasol”!?!

Karen and Mark already had a booth full of customers so I continued around to the Doctor Who Society of Canada and the Capital City Garrison areas to participate in their charity fund raisers and get some fun photos taken.  I would swing by Firefly Cargo Bay a little later and see if I could catch them during a lull to have a chat and take a photo or two.

I swung by several times … no lull, which is a very good thing for a vendor don’t get me wrong 😉  Finally I just dove in along with everyone else to browse, select, and make my way up to where Karen was standing.  I introduced myself to Karen … finally we meet face to face!  We chatted briefly and Karen then introduced me to her husband Mark.  This was Mark’s first time helping Karen at a convention.  Karen’s sister and/or adult nieces usually co-pilot the booth with Karen when Firefly Cargo Bay is attending shows in the US.  Recently Karen and Mark’s daughters have started helping do some co-piloting at Canadian shows with their mom, but this weekend at Ottawa Pop Expo 2014 it was Mark’s turn and he was doing a great job!

I picked up some new Firefly buttons, more for the collection 😉 , and snapped a photo of Karen and Mark.  Love Mark’s Wash inspired shirt!

Pop Expo 2014 - Firefly Cargo Bay - Booth 933 - taken by Laurie KolkThank you Firefly Cargo Bay for coming to visit us here in Ottawa.  Hope that you come back soon … perhaps next Spring the weekend of May 8 to 10th at Ottawa Comiccon 2015?

Did you know… Christmas Gift Suggestions

I met a friend for lunch today at Bayshore Shopping Centre and, as I usually try to do, I was early … so, I wandered around a little until it was time to meet.  During my wandering I walked by Happy Daze on the 3rd floor level (right across from Starbucks) and came to a screeching halt when I spied a Browncoats zippered hoodie!  Whoa, this needs looking into 😉  It turns out I walked in to the store just as Adam, the owner and a Browncoat as it turns out, was starting to do a full Firefly/Browncoat display in the store’s window.  Shiny!!!

Here are some photos of the window display and some stock on shelves … and yes, those really are Firefly Christmas ball ornaments and they come in sets of 4!

Happy Daze_Firefly 3Along with the hoodie, Christmas ball ornaments, t-shirts and Jayne hats, they have Browncoat toques, socks, figurines (Mal, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee, Jayne), Serenity Christmas tree ornaments, Firefly Yahtzee and Firefly Clue.

Happy Daze_Firefly 4 Happy Daze_Firefly 2 Happy Daze_Firefly_1I had a good discussion about Firefly with Adam (that IS what happens when you get two Browncoats together after all) as we looked over all the shiny Firefly goodies they have in stock right now.  One thing Adam did say was that for most things, expect perhaps t-shirts, what they have in stock right now is all that they will be getting in before Christmas and even possibly only this one time.  See something you are interested in, I would suggest picking it up soon!

Until next time … stay shiny and keep flying!
